Admission requirements

The entrance requirement for the Honours degree in Mathematical Statistics is:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a weighted average of at least 60% in either Mathematical Statistics or Statistics as the major subject.
  • The programme requires a Mathematics level equivalent to NQF level 5.
  • The programme requires a Computer Literacy level equivalent to NQF level 5.

Duration

The qualification shall extend over one year of full-time and two years of part-time study.

General

The Department must approve all applications for renewal of registration annually. The Department must approve the enrolment of a candidate for all the modules. All candidates must make themselves available for the honours programme meeting the first day of official lectures as per the Nelson Mandela University almanac. The Honours programme consists of at least four coursework modules and a research report. Successful completion of the research report is required for the degree. The research report must be completed and submitted for assessment the first week of the November examination period. Submissions of the report thereafter may mean the results are released with the January re-assessment marks.

The curriculum normally consists of five modules chosen from the list below. Candidates may replace one of these modules with other appropriate modules with the permission of the Head of the Department.

Purpose

To demonstrate the understanding of statistical theory by writing a research report.

Learning Outcomes

The candidates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to record important definitions and theorems of statistical theory.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply statistical theories to problems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make critical judgements and in-depth interpretations of statistical evaluations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to report on the research methodology required for a statistical project.
  • Demonstrate the ability to clean and code data.
  • Demonstrate the ability to write statistical programmes in a statistical software package.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyse data.
  • Demonstrate the ability to report on statistical analysis and interpretations.
