Recently two statistics students, Kirshnee Moodley and Chantelle Clohessy, were given the opportunity to travel to Germany to conduct research for their Masters degrees.

Here is a brief summary of their trip:

"We spent 3 weeks (1 July - 24 July) in the north of Germany in a town called Oldenburg.  We went there for research purposes in the field of Wind Energy.  The trip was sponsered by DAAD under a program called Developing Sustainability which is run by the university of Oldenburg.  Our individual masters projects both relate to wind energy and this was our motivation for our visit because they have a large department dedicated to research in this field.  The department we visited is called TWIST(turbulence, wind energy and stochastics) which is run by Prof Joachim Peinke.  He visited NMMU earlier this year, where we got a chance to meet him and where the idea for the proposed visit came about.  While we were there, we attended lectures on wind energy, visited a wind farm and received help on our individual masters research.  We also attended a braai at their Energy Lab where we got to meet the department.

We learnt a lot from the visit not only about wind energy but also the German culture.  It was a great experience for us and we hope the information we brought back will promote wind energy research at NMMU and in South Africa."
